View Full Version : Lands End to John O'Groats anyone??

05-04-2006, 04:13 PM
Not sure when but it has been mentioned to do a run from Landsend to John O'Groats.

Probably be about a 5 day run there. Has been sugested to either camp out but as this mayb time consuming, Youth hostels would be a better idea mayb?

ideas in here please! And i know its hard but lets try and keep to topic shall we??

yes i beleive it was my idea....lol

but seriously this could be a excellent event!

a rough plan would be to get press coverage, and sponsored by numerous people (as i said in another link some charitys actually help fund u with this)

idea people........

05-04-2006, 04:17 PM
i dont think personally we could get much press coverage and i wouldnt b organising stuff like that! (someone please feel free to prove me wrong)!

Sue

p.s yes i know it was your idea!

05-04-2006, 04:31 PM
Im well up for doing it, i wouldnt bother with the fundraising though, its a lot of hassle, but i think it could be good - C2Club on tour !!

05-04-2006, 04:32 PM
yeh im up for it. think what a wicked feeling we would have at the end!

petrolhead
05-04-2006, 09:11 PM
That would be so cool!! we could fundraise for charities too - like the C2 Club charity! I'd do it, despite the fact that it'd put looooads more miles on my car, which already has 3600 and it's 2 months old

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 06:03 AM
it would certainly rack up the millage!!!

i think we could do it late summer..... say august time.

it would be a good idea (esp for most of us up north!!) if we drove down, stayed overnight, then started the trip in the morning.

few point we can consider....

are we avoiding motorways,
where would we sleep,
we could make video diarys,
we could get matching decals for our cars, (advertising the fact we are doing it)

.......adam

06-04-2006, 06:20 AM
Matching decalls!!!!!!!!!!!

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 06:30 AM
yes thats what i say.....

06-04-2006, 06:35 AM
if we do it im sure i can get some made up very cheap!

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 06:46 AM
EXCELLENT! i have a mate in your local press, im sure he could give us some coverage, if are serious enough about it.

note to people with kids, would u take them with u, its just im thinking alot of driving may be a prob!

06-04-2006, 06:47 AM
i wouldnt mate. we just need as many people as possible to come!!!!!

Cornwallboys
06-04-2006, 06:59 AM
Driving it over 5 days seems a long time, wouldn't 3 days driving be better then have a day or so partying/resting when we get there?? It isn't that far really.

hughes741
06-04-2006, 07:05 AM
i will do it :)

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 07:16 AM
cornwall, i said 5 days as a rough estimate, the first night would just to to get everyone down there!!

so really it would be 4 days. and if we are avoiding motoways it may take that,

can someone put it in to the sat nat please, give us an idea,

i dont think anymore than 8hours driving a day???

hughes741
06-04-2006, 07:21 AM
if you used motorways it would take about 10 hours

crotchrocket
06-04-2006, 07:40 AM
10 hours is not possible, had a mate do it in a day on a bike though. Its a hell of a long way and is great fun on a bike but not sure about doing it in a car would be pretty boring.
I think maybe the key is to come up with some challenges for the trip and not stay in convoy, i.e
Having to stop in a certain town and pick up a certain item or do some timed sections, that would make it fun. Then re-group in the evenings???????

crotchrocket
06-04-2006, 07:41 AM
Get some car stickers made up and treat it like a rally???

Cornwallboys

Spooky, the AA route planner quotes it as 960.5 miles and should take 23hr 56 min so 3 days at 8 hours driving a day would be spot on. Using motorways is only 839 miles and 19hrs 22 mins but all that time on motorways would be really boring dont you think?

06-04-2006, 07:49 AM
23 Hours! wow!

musicaldesigner
06-04-2006, 07:57 AM
Would be a great challenge for us as a club to do!

06-04-2006, 07:59 AM
nat probably wouldnt want to come but shed probably moan all the way up anyway so it would just be little old me!

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 08:11 AM
crotchrocket - that a brilliant idea!

it would be really good if we could get the rally style stickers for us all to match up.... could be like wacky racers!!

dan can to speak to fine out if they do any sort of car sponsorship?

i agree going on motorways would be boring.
wow this will take some organising!

Can we get a list going then with people that are intrested??

(im poo at doing lists)

we need to think about where we are going to sleep ideas?

06-04-2006, 08:13 AM
will do! will it be sponsorship for the C2club or for a charity ect?

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 08:33 AM
I think charity is better, more people will sponsor us!! i going to have a look at a few charitys....

any preferences??

musicaldesigner
06-04-2006, 08:41 AM
Well Cancer research,

macmillan nurses www.macmillan.org.uk

Animal charities

Oxfam, www.oxfam.org.uk

scope(cerabal palsey,formerly spastics society) www.scope.org.uk

STEPS, childrens charity is a main one for us as a club as it involves Jody and Sue directly. www.steps-charity.org.uk

The bungee jump which Sue did was for this as well as macmillan nurses.

peoples dispendary for sick animals www.pdsa.org.uk

Could go on with listing as are hundreds of charities.

With us as a club being national the charity would be national, as i don't think it would be fair to do it for a local one, plus may get better sponsorship and press coverage.

Alernatively we each do it for our own selected registered charity.

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 08:44 AM
yeh absolutly.

i will look into it this afternoon!

06-04-2006, 08:52 AM
I dont think we should do it for charity.

I think it should just be for fun imo.

Sue

musicaldesigner
06-04-2006, 08:56 AM
We could just do it for fun agreed, but i think for charity would make it all the more rewarding.

crotchrocket
06-04-2006, 09:00 AM
I think tbh the charity idea just gives us a good reason to do it or justify it to girlfriends  Good idea!!

Ok so were talking £123 for petrol for just the trip, at an average of 35mpg, then there's getting from home and back, sleeping and eating etc so gonna cost a bit. Maybe sponsorship for ourselfs????

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 09:04 AM
really is that the cost....

well as i was saying some charitys help you fund the idea, ie they may put some money towards the petrol for us, so long as we donnate as certain amount. the food wont be too much i think, but i do think we desever a resturant meal at the end of it all!!!

06-04-2006, 09:04 AM
ok well if we do do it for charity then to claim anything back for our expenses then we have to raise at LEAST double the expenses each. (thats what they tend to do when you get a *free* bungee jump you raise double the amount of the jump and you get it *free*).

There has to be an agreed amount between EVERYONE what the expenses would be i.e (just an example) £200.

How does that sound?

Sue

spooky_fish
06-04-2006, 09:06 AM
i could raise that easy, just get my umpalumpa in the factory to chip in!! lol

that is easly reachable, if we do it in augist we do need to crack on tho

4 months ish!!

crotchrocket
06-04-2006, 09:08 AM

06-04-2006, 09:10 AM
i still say that youth hostels are probably the best idea?! because there will be no messing with tents etc so can get an early start in the morning! (my mum cycled birmingham to landsend a few times some time ago).

And you obviously can raise as much as you like but then you can only take out one set amount for expenses!

Just a thought

Sue

Okay guys, looking at the dates you may have to count us out for this trip as we will be in Scoland on holiday for the last 2 weeks in August. Looking at Crotchrockets map I would advise you to miss out the ferry trips in Scotland, to get to Arran the fare is £36.50 per car and £5 for driver and each passenger, then to get back off the Island going up to Lochranza it is around £20.35 and £4.55 per driver/each passenger. It could add on a lot of unneccesary expense to the trip and a fair bit of time as well....

06-04-2006, 11:57 AM

Well spotted, i just noticed that, supposed to be driving not hiching a lift on the ferry lol.

Nice map though to give us an idea of where were going!

I worked in Wick and Thurso 2 years ago in the middle of winter, trust me it was cold, so built a fire out of old rotting sleepers etc. to keep warm, the scenery is lovely when a passenger, but as a driver you have to concentrate.

I may talk my dad into being navigator, as he doesn't drive.

i will get the emails address for them magazines when i get home later on tonight. i cant get on them at works.

this they are blocked cos of the sites content me thinks!!!

been thinking tho....

its a massive event so we need to divid the event up. (we all have a task to do)

certain people could do one of the following

magazine sponers (im sort of doing it now)
accomodation (sue)
deacls (stickers) poss u dan?
lists of attendees (we all know who can do that!)
sorting out the charity (i can do this to if no body else will)
collection the money

is this ok, could we get people to do these,
it will help the event get sorted more easily i think....... just an idea tho!

i dont mind sorting the accomodation if everyone is up for the youth hostelling idea which i think would be easiest?

yay on numbers (obviously jody and I will b number 1 as we are c2club owners and all that!!)

Ok i have spoken to both the YHA (england) and the SYHA (scotland) to see about booking the youth hostels previously mentioned:

Lands End 4th August - (to be confirmed)
Shrewsbury, Bridges Long Mynd - (to be confirmed but nothing booked in for that date so far)
Broadmeadows - (provisionally booked for 10 people can make it more for the 6th August booking will stay in place for 28 days), cost £13 per adult per night.
John O'Groats - (as broadmeadows provisionally book for 28 days for 10 people for 7th August *if anyone wants an extra night just yell*), cost £12.50 per adult.

These costs are based on us becoming YHA members (a few of you are under 25 *bugger* so makes it cheaper for you lot)

http://www.yha.org.uk/Join_YHA/Join_Now/Membership_Prices.html prices are here!

Im well up for doing it, i wouldnt bother with the fundraising though, its a lot of hassle, but i think it could be good - C2Club on tour !!

Jody doesnt need to say much because he always says what needs to be said, nothing more, nothing less (well usually).

If you take a route with a few Motorways in it...

Mileage = 839.08

If you go via A-road and a few B-roads avoiding Motorways

Mileage = 989.02

Also more publicity due to more people will see us...

OMG what a nightmare! YHA systems have gone down so they are going to call me back about option number 2!! which is really really fun!

http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/barnpages/21.html

basically she told me that it is a "stone tent"!! better than putting our own up and down i suppose! there is a shower and running water etc so its not that bad! They charge £5 per person or £80 for the whole barn per night (not bad really just depends on how many go) sole use if 8 of us go is still only £10 per night!

She will call me about availability on this in the next day or two!

Fastcar
Topgear (magazine)
FHM
Autocar

Simon: children removed from list, no problem.

I am really up for doing this, even if i am the only C4, more boot space for food/drink and support lol.

i had a word with RAC patrolman when was at garage getting tyres sorted.

Reckons they sponsored Radio 1 chris moyles when they did it. Could be worth a try. I can try to sort this, have blagged things from many music companies in past when gigging for charity and education. so shall try my best if you want.

How many of us are covered by Citroen Assist (who are in partnership) or RAC directly.

I shall get some time booked off from work and money problems should be all sorted by then (unless i get made redundant of course)

P.S. Dan etc. can i be number 4?

Not saying I don't trust the car to do all that mileage in one go, ;-)

On a possitive note, I am really looking forward to this, will have to take it steady due to fuel demands, us little 1.1 /1.4 8v aren't as fuel efficient as the bigger engined models.

07-04-2006, 07:16 AM
i thought we would me more efficent?

Simon72
07-04-2006, 07:20 AM
No 16v 1.6i are more efficient than 1.1/1.4i 8v when cruising, when I cruise in my 1.4i 8v (Sensodrive) at 70mph it is doing 37mpg, and in Kara's 1.4i 16v (Sensodrive) C3 it is doing 46mpg, 8 more valves make a large difference.

07-04-2006, 07:26 AM
oh i see mate! i went up to crewe in the C4 and averaged 42mpg so yeh i guess your right!

Hello again,

Thanks for the reply,

i did not realise this, but as i said we are in the early stages of this so we
could adjust the dates to suit better times.

If we went ahead with this would there be any chance of any coverage in your
magazine?? And if so how would we be able to get hold of so decals of your logo
to put on all the cars (to show your support)

Thanx again for your help.

Adam

due to nat driving the C2 and her not coming i am either going with siwar72 and sharing expenses or going in my car.

Not sure but will know more after the camping trip, there is a lot of arranging needed for this though.

C2-VCT
28-04-2006, 11:08 AM
cornwall, i said 5 days as a rough estimate, the first night would just to to get everyone down there!!

so really it would be 4 days. and if we are avoiding motoways it may take that,

can someone put it in to the sat nat please, give us an idea,

i dont think anymore than 8hours driving a day???

Spooky, the AA route planner quotes it as 960.5 miles and should take 23hr 56 min so 3 days at 8 hours driving a day would be spot on. Using motorways is only 839 miles and 19hrs 22 mins but all that time on motorways would be really boring dont you think?

Multimap quotes 816 miles! So you'd be racking up a good 1600 miles as a round trip! Further if you don't live on the route.

spooky_fish
28-04-2006, 11:33 AM
it under consideration at the mo!

waiting till camping trip is over

28-04-2006, 11:40 AM
yeh its a big ask for most off us but it will be sooooo cool.

petrolhead
28-04-2006, 12:35 PM
we don't have to do the whole thing though, do we? people can just do one leg of the trip, can't they? i hope...

I've already done 4650 miles in my car, and it's only 3 months old! that whole trip would rack up the mileage one hell of a lot more!!

28-04-2006, 01:00 PM
for most people the money is going to be a problem so if this does go ahead then i think it will be a smaller rather than larger turnout.

musicaldesigner
02-05-2006, 06:42 AM
I'm still up for doing it, but only when paid things off, bills etc.

chunky
29-05-2006, 08:35 PM
In my current financial state I'd do the last day of it in Scotland I couldn't justify the mileage or fuel, it'd be a blast but still.
